Description
The terrestrial flora of these islands has been investigated and recorded during several visits, as described comprehensively in Stoddart & Taylor (1971), in which are reports by Stoddart (1971) on vegetation and Fosberg & Bullock (1971). These focussed on the vascular plants of Diego Garcia. Later there were thorough studies of Egmont islands for three months in 1973, of islands on the Great Chagos Bank for three months in 1975 (Bellamy, 1979), and of Peros Banhos and Salomon atolls for 9 months in 1978/9 by Field & Dutton (unpublished).JMW Topp investigated the plants of all the islands as occasion permitted for two years (1984-6) and on annual one month visits (1993- 8) concentrating mainly on Diego Garcia (Topp, 1988). Thus over the last 21 years, the flora of the Chagos Archipelago has been comprehensively recorded, with supporting vouchers of most species obtained and many deposited at the herbarium of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.A table summarizing presence/absence data for 276 species is provided for 59 islands. Island area is included along with invasive species.
