Description

The Vert Galant and L'Heure Berger visited Diego Garcia in 1768 (and possibly the following year) with Abbe de Rochon onboard who was astronomer to the French Navy. In 1769 Lieut La Fontaine reported “a great number of vessels might anchor there in safety; but the principal object is wanting: for though it is covered with woods, it is not provided with fresh water.” (although in fact the isalnds have very high rainfall). http://www.zianet.com/tedmorris/dg/realhistory-2.html
